Do you want to know if one of your employees was arrested this weekend for domestic violence? Do you care that one of your drivers just got a DUI last night? Do you have a policy that says employees must inform you if they are arrested? The answers to these questions are easier than the approach to solving them. At Sterling Infosystems we’ve been working on this for a long time. We think one of the gaping holes in the employee background check business is the failure to be able to provide our customers with a good, cost-effective way of keeping up with their employees once hired. Background checks are not a One-And-Done deal. The majority of people arrested are employed somewhere already, wouldn’t you like to know if that somewhere is your company?

Sterling Infosystems has come up with a new product line called Arrest Direct. Arrest Direct allows you to get real time information on a daily basis for over 85% of all arresting jurisdictions in the United States. There are over 30,000 people arrested daily in the United States, that’s around 11,000,000 people a year. When we started looking at this information we decided to get some of our current customers involved to help us look at the data and assess how it might be used. The staffing agency we worked with told us that they often have to guarantee that they will inform their customers any time a temp they place on site is arrested: but how can they really do that? They have to rely on the employee self-reporting. Another company we worked with sends people out on service calls – literally thousands of them. They would love to know if any of these people who are going to someone’s house might have an arrest record that could represent a serious threat. We started thinking about the idea of employees who are put into a position of “proximity risk.” Proximity risk means the employee works with people (employees or customers) in a manner where their contact with the public can represent risk: Think of home health care for example. What we found is that almost every industry from Colleges to healthcare to banking, to automotive (you name it) have people in Proximity risk positions. This motivated us to push forward. We think this is a product that a lot of people should be interested in.
